The FreeCell Project

A journey to conquer all solitaire games with human intelligence

Welcome, FreeCell and Solitaire players from all over the world! We invite you to a great challenge: to find and record solutions for as many FreeCell games as possible online, using the power of human collective intelligence.

What is The FreeCell Project? A Mission to Solve the Classic Solitaire Card Game

In the 1990s, the classic card game FreeCell, included with Microsoft Windows, became a global phenomenon. This surge in popularity for the solitaire puzzle game sparked a fascinating question: "Are all 32,000 original FreeCell deals solvable?" To find the answer, Dave Ring launched the 'Internet FreeCell Project'.

This ambitious project crowdsourced solutions by assigning sets of 100 FreeCell puzzles to volunteers. If a player reported an unsolvable game, the challenging deal was reassigned to another solitaire strategist. Using countless human brains as a powerful parallel processor, the project successfully analyzed nearly every game, concluding in October 1995. Only one famous deal, FreeCell game #11,982, proved to be an impossible puzzle for every human player. Later, computer analysis confirmed this specific card game was truly unsolvable.

Today, modern Windows offers millions, theoretically almost infinite, FreeCell solitaire games. This is the starting point for our FreeCell Project. We are continuing that original quest, aiming to solve the greatest number of FreeCell games possible using human intelligence. Our goal is to archive every solution and winning strategy online, creating a comprehensive resource for FreeCell and solitaire players everywhere.

What are 'Districts'? A Community Challenge for FreeCell Solitaire

Endlessly playing card games without a clear objective can become monotonous. To provide a focused goal for our solitaire community, we have organized the vast world of FreeCell puzzles into units called 'Districts'.

  • Each District consists of 10,000 unique FreeCell solitaire deals.
  • Once 99.9% of the card game puzzles in a District are solved (leaving 10 or fewer unsolved games), our entire community immediately advances to the next District challenge.

This District system allows our community of solitaire players to share a sense of accomplishment as we conquer these FreeCell goals together.

How Are Rankings Determined on the FreeCell Leaderboard?

Your rank on the leaderboard is determined by your total number of 'Wins'. Become the ultimate FreeCell solitaire solver! You can increase your win count in two ways:

  • When you are the first player to find a solution for a previously unsolved card game puzzle.
  • When you re-solve a puzzle that another user has already completed.

When you solve a game that someone else has already cleared, your 'Win' count for the District Ranking will increase by 1, and the original solver's count will decrease by 1. However, this competitive win transfer does not affect the Daily Ranking score.

How to Find Unsolved Games?

You can find unsolved games at a glance using the Map feature.

  • Unsolved games are marked as white squares with a red dot on the map.
  • Solved games are displayed in the unique color of the user who solved them.
  • Games solved by anonymous users are shown in gray.

Explore the map and take on the challenge of an unconquered FreeCell or Solitaire game!
